The 12th Edition of the African Games were held in Rabat, Casablanca and El-Jadida cities in the Kingdom of Morocco from 19 to 31 August 2019, under the theme; ‘Welcome Africa’’.
The African Games 2019 were the second edition that was organized under the auspices of the African Union. The Games were organized under a tripartite partnership between the African Union Commission (AUC), Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC).
Fifty-four (54) AU Member States participated in the 2019 African Games. Three thousand, nine hundred and thirty-nine (3939) athletes and nine hundred and ninety-nine (999) officials participated in 27 sports disciplines. Seventeen (17) out of the twenty-seven (27) sports disciplines were qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The African Games 2019 were officially opened by His Royal Highness Moulay Rachid of the Kingdom of Morocco. Among the dignitaries during the event were the AUC Chairperson H.E Moussa Faki Mohamat, Commissioner for Social Affairs Department, H.E Amira Elfadil, 27 Ministers in charge of sport from AU Member States, representatives of the IOC, presidents of ANOCA and AASC, ANOCA Executive Board Members, presidents of International Sport Federations and Continental Sport Confederations and their representatives. Also in attendance were the World Anti-Doping Agency Director General, AUSC Sports Development Regions Chairpersons and Secretaries General, Presidents and Secretaries General of National Olympic Committees, Government Officials from AU Member States, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, international and local media and other invited guests.
Achievements
The 12th Edition of the African Games was attended by 54 African Union Member States despite a short period for preparations.
Out of twenty-seven (27) sport disciplines 17 were qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
