The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) 5‑Year Strategic Plan (2024–2028) has been officially endorsed by the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held from 11–12 February 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Executive Council, composed primarily of Ministers of Foreign Affairs from all AU Member States, is mandated to take decisions on policies in areas of common interest across the continent.
The AUSC Strategic Plan serves as a comprehensive blueprint to guide the Council’s work over the next five years. It promotes a systematic and coherent approach to long‑term planning for both sport development and sport‑for‑development across Africa. The Plan reinforces sport’s role as a catalyst for the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, which envisions “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena.”
Aligned with key continental frameworks—including the Second Ten‑Year Implementation Plan (2024–2033) of Agenda 2063 and the AU 5‑Year Strategic Plan (2024–2028)—the AUSC Strategic Plan operationalises the AU Policy for the Sustainable Development of Sports in Africa (2023–2033). It is built around five strategic priorities:
- Good Governance and Accountability
- Equity and Inclusion
- Participation
- Performance
- Sustainability
The implementation of the Strategic Plan is supported by a digital monitoring and evaluation framework featuring clear indicators, targets, and timelines for each objective. This framework highlights how sport and talent development can contribute to Africa’s socio‑economic transformation, particularly through the empowerment of young people.
The African Union Sports Council calls on all Member States, stakeholders in the sports movement, and civil society organisations to align their priorities with the AUSC Strategic Plan. Such alignment will help harmonise the sports sector and ensure that collective efforts advance the aspirations of The Africa We Want.
