Regions Background
THE AFRICAN UNION SPORT DEVELOPMENT REGIONS
Composition
The African Union Sport Development Regions are aligned with the geographical distribution of the African Union as approved by the Executive Council and endorsed by the Assembly of the Union.
There are five (5) African Union Sport Development Regions, namely, Northern, Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern.
The geographical distribution of the five (5) Regions is as follows :
- REGION 1 (Northern Africa) : Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic.
- REGION 2 (West Africa) : Benin, Burkina Faso, Capo Verde, Cote dโIvoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
- REGION 3 (Central Africa) : Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome & Principe
- REGION 4 (Eastern Africa) : Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
- REGION 5 (Southern Africa) : Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Organs of the African Union Sports Development Regions
Each African Union Sport Development Region has the following organs :ย
- The Conference of Ministers of Sport of the Region;
- Executive Committee of Experts from Member States of the Region; and
- The Secretariat of the AU Sport Development Regions (Regional Secretariat).
Each Region develops its own strategies, structures, programs and resource mobilization mechanisms within the objectives and mandate of the AUSC. The Representatives of AUSC Secretariat, ANOCA, Sport Confederations and Associate Sports Bodies attend the meetings and activities of the Organs of the AU Sport Development Regions as members in an advisory capacity.
The Regional Secretariat is the administrative structure of the Region responsible for carrying out the tasks inherent in the missions assigned to the Regions and must submit an annual report to the AUSC. Each Region decides on the Host Country of the Permanent Regional Secretariat.
