The recently appointed Technical Committee for the African Games (TCAG) has elected a new Bureau and the entire Committee is currently undergoing an induction workshop at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 20 to 22 November 2024.
This is in accordance with Article 18 (3) of the Statute of the African Union Sports Council on the election of the Bureau which is made up of the following members: Mr. Sid Ahmed Selmi Chairperson (AUSC Region 1); Dr Samuel Ogbondeminu Vice Chairperson (AUSC Region 2); and Mrs. Penina Kabenge Aligawese as Rapporteur.
The new Bureauโs mandate started on 20 November 2024 and they shall be in office for a period of two years.
The TCAG is given the mandate to propose an objective criterion for evaluating the bidding files for the host countries and overseeing the management and organization of the Games by the Local Organizing Committee, amongst other duties.
During this induction workshop, the TCAG Members are being acquainted with the legal frameworks governing the African Games and to recommend reviews to some of the Games' governing instruments.
The African Games were established for the purposes of promoting high performance in African sports and enhancing sporting and cultural exchanges between African Union Member States.
They are a multi-disciplinary sport competition established under the ownership and
patronage of the African Union.
Apart from this, the Games are also an exclusive property of the African Union that holds all rights relating to their organization, exploitation, broadcast and reproduction by any means whatsoever.
Organized once every four (4) years and (1) one year before the Olympic Games, they are organized in line with the rules and regulations adopted by the African Union Specialized Technical Committee for Youth, Culture and Sports (STC-YCS).
